If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why am I still doubting myself?”—you’re not alone.
Even smart, capable professionals struggle with fear of failure, overwhelm, and worrying what others think.
These mindset traps silently sabotage your performance, progress, and peace of mind.
But being confident in yourself isn’t something you “wait” to have—it’s something you work to earn.
You don’t need to wait until you feel ready or are sure you won’t fail (ridiculous) or until no one’s watching.
I have the instruction for you NOW!
This past Thursday, in my Leadership Coaching Program, I taught exactly how to build your confidence.
If you’re interested in getting my formula, why not jump in my leadership program and get this great lesson and an entire leadership library filled with lessons on ALL the career skills you need to max out your progress and enjoyment?
CONFIDENCE RECAP!
One thing you gotta know…
“Confidence and success are not found in the quality of your talent, but in the quality of your thoughts. […] Confidence has more to do with your relationship with failure than success. When all goes well and we win, it’s easy to believe in ourselves. Failures, on the other hand, can negatively impact our confidence levels if we don’t interpret them properly.”
That’s from me straight outta The Zebra Code.
Confidence is built, not born. Confidence is learned, not given. Confidence is not an innate trait but a skill shaped by experiences, environment, and mindset. Fear and self-doubt, including imposter syndrome, are learned responses often reinforced by our environment and social comparisons. Your first step is to recognize that confidence can be developed by anyone, regardless of starting point.
Design “failure” into (yes, into) the process. Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a prerequisite for it. Confident people view failures as stepping stones, not endpoints. Each misstep is an opportunity to learn and grow. Adopt a mindset where failure is expected and designed into your growth process—this is “progressive mastery.”
3 common reasons you lack confidence.Issues with confidence generally fall into one of these categories: 1) Executing a task you’re unsure how to do or reluctant to do, 2) Taking on a big project that appears daunting, 3) “Looking badly” when performing an activity.
Build confidence through repetition and reflection.Unsure how to do? Put in the reps, practice, evaluate, adjust, and repeat. Big project? Break into manageable pieces and focus on the next actionable step. Worried you’ll “look badly?” Change viewpoint by focusing on service rather than self.
Track and reflect on your progress—with the best success metrics. Most of our lack of confidence, and general unhappiness, comes from our expectations. That is, the lack of our expectations being met. The way to avoid this is setting up the correct success metrics and continually evaluating your progress against them. The very best success metrics, characteristically, will be ones you can completely control.
Bonus: Create a supportive environment. Surrounding oneself with supportive people, setting up systems for accountability, and seeking mentors can all contribute to building and sustaining confidence. Everyone is either a supporter, detractor, or neutral. Neutral people shouldn’t even be part of your environment. Ditch the non-supporters. You only need a few cheerleaders in your corner to make a huge difference!
As you can see from these highlights related to building confidence, there is a lot to putting yourself on and keep yourself on the right track!
