It makes no difference where you are on the organigram.

You need to be able to motivate others.

It’s like a law in the canon of being a human being.

I have long said, “Optimism is something you manufacture from your attitude. Inspiration is something someone else manufactures from your optimism.”

But, motivating and inspiring others stems from so much more than having a good attitude.

It’s a nice start, but there are complexities related to human emotion, drive, and caveman-like traits soldered into our DNA that make us react a certain way to certain statements and behaviors.

Once you understand these complexities and the tactics to positively influence and motivate others, your stock as a human being goes up as does your enjoyment of life.

I don’t want to put words in your mouth, name, but if you’re still reading my blog, odds say you aspire to be more motivating.

So glad you’re still with me because, today, I have a digest on my interpretation of the main areas that will help you motivate others.

5 KEYS TO SUCCESSFULLY MOTIVATING OTHERS

From my experience managing and coaching thousands of individuals, I notice five areas, that when addressed effectively, motivate others to inspire the best performance and best experience for their efforts.

1. The motivation part = What do they want? When it comes to motivating someone, the easiest way is to help them achieve what they want. We can look at this from two vantage points: 1) What do most people, in general, want (autonomy, competence, relatedness)? 2) What do these people specifically want?

2. The first communication part = What is their development language? Each person has a developmental language (similar to the well-known “love” languages). When responding to direction, feedback, or motivation, each person reacts differently. Learn their languages (actions, awards, attention, affirmation) to elicit the positive reactions.

3. The challenge part = What is their incentive? A big part of motivating people is to appeal to their sense of challenge. The figurative, “I challenge you to…” is very powerful when combined with how the result will benefit them. This particular challenge should appeal to their transformation.

4. The Environment Part = What do they need to succeed? Their overall “operating environment,” and all its components, are vital success factors to not only motivate people, but for them to achieve their goals. Dial up their sense of purpose, how they fit in, specific goals and expectations, support and resources, autonomy and empowerment and a team atmosphere.

5. The second communication part = How to provide feedback and recognition? Foundational to all tactics you deploy to motivate people will be your ability to communicate effectively throughout the process. This communication includes feedback using their development languages, encouragement when their attitudes wane, and recognition to acknowledge their efforts and achievements.
